Visit to Fursdon (Buildings Section)

Wed. 10 April 2024 at 10:15 am

Fursdon is a grade II listed early 17th-century house in four acres of garden. It has been the seat of the Fursdon family since at least 1259. There was considerable remodelling in 1732 and further alterations in 1792, but the core of an earlier building is evident in places. Recent renovations have indicated that the remodelling of 1732 preserved the scale and outline of an earlier building and a will of 1652 suggests that the house was H shaped. The library, principal stair and colonnade were added in 1818–20.

  • 10:15 Coffee/tea and cake will be served in the coach hall tearoom
  • 11:00 Guided tour of house. Please meet at the front of the house

Before/After: You will be able to visit the gardens

Accessibility: The tea room is accessible for wheelchair users, as is the house, but the garden has very limited accessibility. The toilets are not large enough to accommodate a wheelchair.

Photography: Not allowed in the house

Directions: Cadbury Postcode EX5 5JS. From Exeter take A396 Tiverton Road. Fursdon is signposted about 2 miles from Rewe and signs direct one to the house. Reaching Fursdon House, take the road over the cattle grid that leads to the house. This route is quite a long way over very narrow roads and the easier route is via the A3072 (see below). From Tiverton, take the A396, signposted Bickleigh and at Bickleigh bear right onto the A3072, signposted Bickleigh Castle. Fursdon is very clearly signed until the house is reached. You will pass the house and on the left take the road over the cattle grid.

Cost of the event: £19 including coffee/tea and cake

Lunch: Ruby Red Cafe at Exe Valley Farm Shop EX5 5LZ 01392 861403 or Bickleigh Mill EX16 8RG 01884 855419 on the A396.

Note that booking for Fursdon closes on 20 March.
