Event Navigation
A field trip to the vicinity of Gara Rock in the South Hams. To be led by Chris Adams (Kingsbridge U3A) and John Mather (Emeritus Prof, Royal Holloway).
Meet at the honesty box car park by the side of the Gara Rock Hotel (postcode TQ8 8FA) and walk down to the cliff path and into the cove – it’s a bit steep in places but not too bad. In the cliffs backing the cove we will see both Hornblende and Mica Schists and how they are faulted against each other and how they are being eroded. There are also good Quaternary features to examine including extensive head deposits and evidence of previous sea levels. This should take us a couple of hours.
If anyone wants to extend the visit into the afternoon there is plenty to explore by walking east towards Prawle Point or west towards Mill Bay on the Kingsbridge Estuary.
Please book by 20 August.
