Kelly Mine, located close to Lustleigh Village on the A382, is a unique example of an early 20th-century micaceous haematite mine with many original features and machinery. The mine site has been rescued from a derelict condition and restored to be, as close as practical, as it would have been as a working mine.
Micaceous haematite, otherwise known as ‘shiny ore’, was used for various purposes including, latterly, in the manufacture of grey paint for buildings and warships.
Accessibility: Access is difficult and car sharing will be essential. There are no toilets or other facilities on site.
13:00 Assemble promptly at Station Road Car Park, Bovey Tracey TQ13 9AL (where there are toilets) for further directions. Car parking charges will apply.
Closing date for booking: 4 September. Bookings are taken in order of receipt. Non-Buildings Section members (including friends & spouses) will only be considered after members.
