Visit to Stoke Hill Camp (Exeter Branch)

Wed. 22 July 2026 at 2:30 pm

Professor Willie Hamilton CBE, whose Stoke Hill Farm estate contains Stoke Hill Camp, will lead a short walk to examine and discuss the Iron Age hillfort. Archaeological finds indicate that occupation may have extended until Roman times. The fort is strategically located on a high ridge offering expansive 360° views over the surrounding countryside, including the Exe Estuary, Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Wellington monument. It is defined as a slight univallate hillfort, roughly oval in shape, and is enclosed by a single rampart and ditch.

The tour will be followed by tea and cake and an opportunity to view one of the largest private collections of works by the artist Frederic John Widgery (1861–1942), who painted landscapes and coastal scenery in South West England.

There is a nearby parking area off Pennsylvania Road at Stoke Woods upper car park, leaving an 800m walk. There is also disabled parking at the Farm itself (Pennsylvania Road, Exeter EX4 5BW).

Booking is essential. Please note that as of 8 July this event is fully booked.
