Visit to the Teign Valley Railway Goods Yard (IA Section)

Tue. 6 June 2023 at 2:30 pm

A visit to the Teign Valley Railway Goods Yard at Christow, to be hosted by Colin Burges.

“The Teign Valley branch railway was built in two halves by two companies, with twenty-one years separating their completions. The line from Heathfield, on the Moretonhampstead Branch, to Teign House Siding (just short of the site of Christow Station) was built by the Teign Valley Railway and opened in 1882. It mostly followed the river valley.

“From Christow to a junction with the Great Western main line near St. Thomas in Exeter was completed by the Exeter Railway in 1903. The line left the Teign and passed through two tunnels to reach the Exe Valley.

“The two companies, formed under different names, ended up with only eight miles of railway. It was worked by the G.W.R. and later known as the Teign Valley Branch. It was closed in 1958.”

Colin Burges is a railwayman, and owner and operator of the Teign Valley Railway, and is restoring the Christow Station goods yard.

There is no charge for the visit. However, Colin will provide tea and cakes for visitors, and would appreciate donations for the visit and tea. He requests that we car share as much as possible.
